Flag Gold

Hornets flag football is a travel program, designed to introduce children to organized football.

The following are frequently asked questions about our flag program.

Q - Who is eligible to play flag football?
A - Children ages 5-7 years as of September 1, 2016 are eligible to play flag football.  Kids who turn 8 before December 1, 2016 are NOT eligible to play Flag football.

Players must weigh in each week before a game, wearing a minimum of socks, underwear, supporter and cup, game pants, and game jersey.

Kids who turn 7 years old before September 1, 2016 must weigh less than 64 pounds, and are allowed one pound per week growth.  If a 7 year old as of September 1, 2016 is over 64 pounds at the first weigh in, they will be stripers )not allowed to carry the ball).  7 year olds who are over 70 pound are not allowed to play flag football and are encouraged to register for tackle.

5-6 year olds (as of September 1, 2016) over 64 pounds will be stripers. There is no maximum weight for 5-6 year old stripers. Stripers are not allowed to carry the ball.

Q - How are the teams decided?
A - Depending on how many children have registered, we will divide into teams as equally weighted as possible.  We play with 9 players, so ideally, we like to have around 12 kids on a team.  Families with more than one player in flag will always be on the same team.  Coaches will always have their child on their team.

Q - What is the cost?
A - Cost for the 2016 season is $150 with an additional $30 for the mandatory fundraiser.  Costs will include use of equipment and use of helmet, and a jersey, socks, t-shirt (fundraiser) and a year end trophy for the player to keep.

Q - What equipment must I provide?
A - You will provide football cleats, a protective cup, mouth guard and black football pants (unpadded or padded).  Football pants only need be worn for games.
Equipment provided by the Hornets will be distributed at practice.

Q - When does the season start and finish?
A - The flag football season runs August to October.

Q - How many games are there?
A - BGYFL schedules nine regular season games for each team.  Four or five home games are played at either Lemont High School or Bambrick Park. Four or five away games are hosted by other BGYFL teams. There are no play-offs.

Q - What about practices?
A - Practice begins in early August for 2 days per week, 90 minutes each at Bambrick Park. Players should wear a t-shirt, shorts, protective cup, mouth guard and cleats.  Please bring lots of water to practice.  Sun screen and insect repellent are recommended.

Q - What documentation do I need to provide?
A - In addition to registering online, please bring a photo copy of your child's birth certificate to the first practice.

Q - What are the required volunteer hours?
A - We will require 3 hours of volunteer time from each player's family.  We need coaches, and this is a great way to satisfy your volunteer time and be involved in your child's development.  Coaches will receive a Hornets Team Shirt and a picture with your player from picture day. We will also need a team mom for each team who will organize the snack schedules and be involved in communication to parents.  In addition, for home games, we will ask for families to help with setting up the field, working the chains and down markers during the game and breaking down the field throughout the season.
